Professor Ingo Gestring takes over as head of the university

On April 1, 2025, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ingo Gestring will take office as Rector of the Dresden University of Applied Sciences (HTWD). On March 27, 2025, he was officially appointed as the new Rector of HTW Dresden by the Saxon State Minister for Science, Sebastian Gemkow. The Extended Senate of the university elected Professor Ingo Gestring on April 30, 2024. The term of office is five years.

Professor Ingo Gestring has more than 20 years of leadership experience in university management and business. He held senior positions in the automotive industry for several years, most recently as Head of Production and Logistics at Volkswagen's Transparent Factory in Dresden. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Hanover until 1998, where he completed his doctorate in 2002. In 2009, the engineer was appointed Professor of Materials Management and Production Logistics at HTWD. From 2015 to 2021, he was Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics. In 2022 and 2024, the professor received the HTWD's prize for good teaching. Ingo Gestring is very well networked both in Saxony and Germany as well as internationally.

“The core tasks of a university are teaching and research. I will place these even more strongly at the center of my work in the future. I am committed to the Humboldtian educational ideal, supplemented by practical relevance and professional skills.

The university is a community of teachers, researchers, employees and, above all, students. Together, we want to create a family environment in which all members can continue to develop and where changes are tackled with courage.

I want our university to be one of the best and most efficient universities of applied sciences in eastern Germany and to set standards in teaching, research and transfer,” says the new Rector, summarizing his aspirations for the position.

In future, the university will have an even greater impact on society as a driving force and will be a reliable partner for business, especially SMEs. In addition to strong application-oriented research, these are essential prerequisites for making teaching fit for the future, emphasizes Gestring. He sees a strong university community, which must be promoted, as the basis for the university's success.

Professor Ingo Gestring succeeds Professor Katrin Salchert, who has headed the university since 2020.
